How our figures are worked out
Our tools apply published HMRC rates and thresholds together with standard, simplifying assumptions to produce an estimate. Real-world tax outcomes depend on details our tools can't know — for example your full income from all sources, available allowances and reliefs, pension contributions, your residency and domicile position, the specific terms and IR35 status of a contract, student-loan plans, and how a limited company is structured. Because of that, the figures we show are best treated as an illustration of the ballpark, not a statement of the tax you will actually pay.
Accuracy and currency
We take reasonable care to keep the rates current — reviewing them each April at the start of the new tax year and patching for in-year changes at fiscal events — and each tool links to the relevant gov.uk page so you can verify the underlying rule. Even so, tax rules change, errors are possible, and there may be a lag between an announcement and an update here. We give no warranty that the information is complete, current or error-free. Where our figures and the official gov.uk position differ, gov.uk is authoritative.
